Edwin Gould

Pottery

Edwin Gould has been a potter for about 20 years. Before his retirement in 1996 he spent 35 years as an academician, scientist, naturalist and zoo curator during which he studied an unusual array of lesser-known flora and fauna of Madagascar, Malaysia and North America. Many of the creatures and plants find their way into Gould's complex hand-built pieces. His bar mitzvah in 1996 sparked his interest in Judaica. He integrates his life interests and research in natural history into clay forms of pots, mirrors, Judaica and architectural ceramics. He has been a student at Baltimore Clayworks, Columbia Art Center , Oaxaca , Mexico , with Mixtec Indians and Meridiana in Tuscany , Italy . He has taught children at Jewish summer camps and now teaches adolescents-at-risk at a job training center. Edwin Gould’s pots resemble a complex motion of rope or fine textiles. Often the organic forms are interlaced with dragonflies, wasps, butterflies, turtles and tropical leaves. His long term goal is to produce architectural ceramics for synagogues and continue teaching at-risk adolescents.
